The verdict. Ten strains, 50 billion CFU, about forty cents a capsule from a manufacturer that runs its own testing labs. Probiotics are an oversold category with a genuine core, and this is a fairly priced way into it — provided you understand what you're buying.
Who this is for
- You've just finished a course of antibiotics and want to support the rebuild.
- Your digestion is unsettled and you've already looked at fibre and food.
- You travel and your gut notices before you do.
Who should skip it
If your digestion is fine, there's little case for taking one daily forever — the evidence for prophylactic use in healthy people is weak. If you're immunocompromised or seriously unwell, talk to a doctor first: live bacteria are not risk-free in that situation. And if the real problem is that you eat almost no fibre, fix that first — you're feeding the bacteria you already have, which is cheaper and better supported.
What's actually in it
A ten-strain blend at 50 billion CFU per capsule. Two things matter more than the headline number. Strain specificity — benefits in research attach to particular strains, not to "probiotics" generally, so the strain list is the product. And CFU at expiry, not at manufacture — the honest brands guarantee the count through the best-before date. Check the label for which one is quoted.
What the research actually looks at
Genuinely mixed, and worth being straight about. There's reasonable evidence for specific strains in specific situations — antibiotic-associated digestive upset is the best supported. The evidence for general daily use in healthy adults improving vague "gut health" is much weaker than the marketing implies. The field is also moving fast, and much of what's sold is ahead of what's shown.
How we'd use it
Daily with food, and store it as the label says — some blends need refrigeration and lose potency on a warm shelf. If you're taking it after antibiotics, space it a couple of hours from the antibiotic dose. Give it two to four weeks.
The honest trade-offs
- 50 capsules is under two months — the per-bottle price understates the running cost.
- CFU counts are marketing as much as science. More isn't automatically better; the right strain at a modest dose beats a huge dose of the wrong one.
- Bloating in the first week is common and usually settles.
- Real caution for anyone immunocompromised.
Bottom line
A sensibly priced, well-made product in a category that promises more than it can prove. Worth it around antibiotics or genuine digestive trouble. Not worth it as a daily habit if nothing's wrong.
